What's Happening?
Save the Children International has announced the appointment of Filippo Grandi, a global humanitarian leader, as the new chair of its Board of Trustees. Mr. Grandi, who previously served as the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) from
2016 to 2025, will assume the role in January 2027. He will succeed American British businesswoman Angela Ahrendts, who has held the position for the past six years. Mr. Grandi brings over four decades of experience in humanitarian work, including leadership roles with the UN agency for Palestine refugees (UNRWA) and extensive work with NGOs and UNHCR across Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. His appointment was made by the Save the Children Assembly following a comprehensive selection process.
Why It's Important?
This leadership change comes at a critical time when children globally face unprecedented challenges, including conflict, displacement, inequality, and climate-driven emergencies. Mr. Grandi's extensive background in addressing complex humanitarian crises and his commitment to protecting vulnerable populations align directly with Save the Children's mission. His experience in international cooperation and his understanding of the devastating impact of crises on children are expected to strengthen the organization's global responses and drive meaningful change. The appointment signals a continued focus on advocating for children's rights and well-being, ensuring these remain central to global attention, especially as the organization aims to deliver lasting impact in challenging contexts worldwide.
What's Next?
Filippo Grandi will officially begin his tenure as Board Chair in January 2027. His immediate focus will likely involve strengthening Save the Children's mission amidst ongoing global challenges. The organization anticipates leveraging his deep understanding of humanitarian issues to enhance its strategic direction and impact for children. This transition is expected to reinforce Save the Children's efforts in responding to and anticipating threats from conflict and crisis, while continuing to protect the rights of children most affected by inequality and discrimination. His leadership will also be crucial in guiding the organization's initiatives to provide healthy starts, learning opportunities, and protection from harm for children globally.
Beyond the Headlines
Mr. Grandi's appointment underscores the increasing complexity and interconnectedness of global humanitarian challenges. His long-standing career in refugee and humanitarian work highlights the critical need for experienced leadership in organizations dedicated to child welfare. The emphasis on 'acting early, decisively and in a sustainable manner' reflects a broader shift in humanitarian aid towards more proactive and long-term solutions rather than solely reactive responses. This leadership choice also signifies the importance of international collaboration and advocacy in addressing issues that transcend national borders, such as climate change and displacement, which disproportionately affect children. His role will likely influence the strategic direction of child protection and development efforts on a global scale.
