What's Happening?
HOTREC, a coalition of European hospitality businesses and employers, is urging the European Parliament to reject legislative measures concerning Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the workplace. The group
argues that the existing EU legal framework, including the AI Act and General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), is sufficient to govern AI use. They believe additional legislation could complicate compliance, create regulatory overlap, and reduce legal certainty. The coalition emphasizes the need for practical implementation and enforcement of current rules, supported by clear guidance and social dialogue, to ensure AI technologies are adopted responsibly without hindering innovation and competitiveness.
Why It's Important?
The debate over AI regulation in the European Union is significant as it impacts the balance between innovation and regulation. The hospitality sector, comprising many small and medium-sized enterprises, is concerned that over-regulation could increase administrative burdens and hinder competitiveness. By advocating for a non-legislative approach, the coalition aims to ensure that AI technologies can be integrated into business operations without unnecessary regulatory hurdles. This stance highlights the broader challenge of regulating emerging technologies while fostering an environment conducive to innovation and economic growth.
