What's Happening?
Twin brothers Fousseni and Alahassane Diakite have opened a cocoa processing factory in Divo, Ivory Coast, aiming to increase local processing of cocoa beans. Currently, Ivory Coast processes only about
40% of its cocoa locally, with the rest exported. The brothers' factory has a capacity of 36,000 tons annually, with plans to expand to 80,000 tons. Their initiative is part of a broader effort to add value locally and inspire future generations. The factory also emphasizes sustainability, using renewable energy and ensuring traceability of their products.
Why It's Important?
The Diakite brothers' venture could significantly impact the cocoa industry by increasing local processing, which adds value and creates jobs within Ivory Coast. This move could reduce the country's reliance on exporting raw cocoa, allowing it to benefit more from its natural resources. The initiative also aligns with global trends towards ethical and sustainable production, potentially attracting international markets interested in traceable and environmentally friendly products. By creating jobs and using renewable energy, the factory supports local economic development and environmental sustainability.
