Researchers at the National Autonomous University of Mexico have identified a diverse array of bacteria in the soil of the Mixteca Alta UNESCO Global Geopark in Oaxaca. Led by Mario Alberto Martínez-Núñez and Quetzalcóatl Orozco-Ramírez, the team analyzed
the soil microbiome and found 21 major bacterial groups, with Acidobacteria, Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, and Chloroflexi being the most prevalent. These bacteria are linked to essential soil functions such as organic matter decomposition and disease prevention. The study suggests that these microbes could be harnessed to create biofertilizers and biostimulants, potentially reducing the need for chemical fertilizers. The research highlights the importance of soil health and the role of microbes in maintaining agricultural productivity.
