A new peer-reviewed study has identified over 1,200 chemicals used in food processing and packaging that pose serious health risks, including cancer and reproductive harm. The research, led by the nonprofit Food Packaging Forum Foundation, found that out
of more than 15,000 chemicals that come into contact with food, 87% (over 13,200) lack sufficient accessible information to assess their potential harms. The study categorized 1,222 problematic chemicals into four tiers based on evidence of human exposure from food-contact materials. The highest priority, Tier 1, includes 94 chemicals detected in human samples like breast milk and blood, such as PFAS 'forever chemicals,' styrene, phthalates, and bisphenol A. These chemicals are known to leach into food from packaging materials like grease-resistant wrappers, takeout containers, and plastic bottles. The study emphasizes that consumers often assume regulatory approval implies safety, which is not always the case.
