What's Happening?
NASA has awarded SpaceX a contract to provide laser communications capabilities for the Artemis III mission using Starlink technology. This initiative aims to enhance the communication system for the mission, scheduled for 2027, by installing two Starlink mini
laser terminals on the Orion spacecraft. These terminals will supplement the existing communication systems and are expected to deliver 4K imagery and video to NASA’s Mission Control Center in Houston, Texas. Historically, NASA's crewed missions have relied on the Tracking and Data Relay Satellite (TDRS) system, but the agency is transitioning towards commercial satellite relay services through its Communications Services Project. The Artemis II mission had already demonstrated the use of laser terminals for transmitting high-definition visuals from the spacecraft to Earth.
