What's Happening?
The Imperial County Board of Supervisors has reconsidered its previous decision to select SkyWest Charter as the county's preferred air service provider. During a meeting on March 3, the board decided to change its preference to Advanced Air. This decision was
influenced by public feedback, which highlighted a demand for flights to Phoenix and Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) for work and medical purposes. The board's chair, Peggy Price, emphasized that the vote was not on a contract but rather on a preference, with the final decision resting with the U.S. Department of Transportation. Advanced Air was chosen due to its 24-trip option and confirmed destinations of Phoenix and LAX. A secondary motion to select Boutique Air as an alternative preference was also passed, although it did not receive unanimous support due to its lack of a Phoenix destination.
Why It's Important?
This decision is significant as it reflects the county's responsiveness to public needs and preferences, particularly regarding essential travel destinations. By selecting Advanced Air, the board aims to better serve the community's travel requirements, potentially enhancing connectivity and accessibility for residents. The choice of air service provider can impact local economic activities, especially in regions where air travel is crucial for business and healthcare access. The decision also underscores the importance of public input in local governance, as community feedback played a pivotal role in the board's reconsideration.
What's Next?
The next steps involve the U.S. Department of Transportation reviewing the county's preference for Advanced Air. The department will make the final decision on the air service provider. Meanwhile, the board will continue to engage with the public and stakeholders to ensure that the selected provider meets the community's needs. Additionally, the board is working on a County Veterinarian Recruitment and Retention Program to address the shortage of veterinary professionals in the region, which will be further deliberated by the newly formed Public Benefit Committee.
