What's Happening?
Post-Fair, a curatorially-minded art fair that has become a staple of Frieze Los Angeles week, is set to expand internationally with its first edition in Paris. Scheduled from October 19 to October 25, the fair will coincide with Art Basel Paris. The
Paris edition will be held in two architecturally distinct buildings in the Marais district, continuing the fair's tradition of utilizing unique venues. Post-Fair founder Chris Sharp, who has a history in Paris, aims to replicate the success of the Los Angeles edition by offering a more affordable platform for galleries. The fair will feature around 34 galleries, with exhibitors from major cities like Los Angeles, New York, and Tokyo. The event is designed to foster a museum-like atmosphere, allowing galleries to take greater curatorial risks.
Why It's Important?
The expansion of Post-Fair to Paris highlights the growing importance of the city as a key destination in the art market, especially post-Brexit. By offering lower participation costs, the fair provides an alternative to the high fees associated with major commercial art fairs, enabling galleries to present more innovative and less commercially driven works. This model could influence the structure of future art fairs, encouraging a shift towards more inclusive and diverse art presentations. The presence of American and Asian collectors in Paris further underscores the city's rising prominence in the global art scene.
What's Next?
The exhibitor list for Post-Fair Paris will be announced in September, with anticipation building around the unique presentations that galleries will bring to the event. The fair's success could lead to further international editions, potentially reshaping the landscape of art fairs by prioritizing creative freedom over commercial constraints. As Paris continues to attract more art events, the city's role as a cultural hub is likely to strengthen, drawing more international attention and investment.
