What's Happening?
Macmillan Publishers, along with other major literary organizations, have partnered with PEN America to establish the U.S. Author Safety Program. This initiative aims to provide authors with training, consultations, resources, and peer support in response
to increasing threats and harassment linked to book bans. The program has already raised nearly $1 million and seeks to reach a $2 million target. It builds on previous efforts by PEN America to support journalists and authors facing intimidation. The program will offer tailored safety consultations and resources to authors, starting with outreach to the literary community this summer.
Why It's Important?
The establishment of the U.S. Author Safety Program is significant as it addresses the growing concerns over author safety in the U.S., particularly in light of increasing book bans and legislative efforts to restrict educational materials. This initiative highlights the commitment of the literary community to protect authors' rights and freedom of expression. By providing resources and support, the program aims to empower authors to continue their work without compromising their safety. The involvement of major publishers and literary figures underscores the importance of safeguarding creative voices in the face of censorship and harassment.
What's Next?
PEN America plans to roll out the program this summer, beginning with outreach to the literary community. Small group safety consultations with authors are expected to start in the fall. As the program develops, authors will have direct access to the safety team through various channels, including publishers and literary organizations. The initiative will be tailored to meet the unique needs of authors, ensuring they have the necessary support to navigate threats and continue their work. The ongoing legislative efforts regarding book bans may further influence the program's focus and resources.
