What's Happening?
Elea Data Centres, in partnership with renewable energy company AXIA Energia, plans to launch the first neutral AI data centre in the Amazon region by the second quarter of 2027. The new facility, named BEL1, will be located in Belém, Pará, with an initial
IT load capacity of 7.5MW, potentially expanding to 100MW. Elea will operate the data centre, while AXIA will provide 100% renewable energy under a power purchase agreement. The project aims to enhance Brazil's digital infrastructure and reduce digital inequality by offering an alternative route to Fortaleza.
Why It's Important?
This initiative is crucial for Brazil's digital transformation, as it strengthens the country's digital infrastructure and promotes sustainable development. By utilizing renewable energy, the project aligns with global efforts to reduce carbon footprints in the tech industry. The data centre's strategic location in the Amazon region underscores the importance of geographic diversification in digital infrastructure, which can enhance regional competitiveness and attract further investments. This development also positions AXIA Energia as a key player in Brazil's growing data centre market, highlighting the increasing demand for sustainable energy solutions in the tech sector.
What's Next?
As the project progresses, Elea and AXIA will focus on expanding the data centre's capacity and ensuring operational efficiency. The successful implementation of this project could lead to further collaborations between tech and energy companies, fostering innovation in digital infrastructure. Additionally, the data centre's impact on regional development will be closely monitored, potentially influencing future policies on digital and sustainable development in Brazil.
