The SK Group has announced its entry into Vietnam's AI industry by signing an agreement to develop an AI Data Center (AIDC) in the Nghe An region. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to expand SK Group's presence in the AI sector globally. The agreement was
signed during the Korea-Vietnam Business Forum in Hanoi, alongside a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Vietnam's National Innovation Center (NIC) to support the country's AI ecosystem. The Nghe An region, a significant economic hub in north-central Vietnam, is poised for growth in manufacturing, energy, and advanced industries, supported by its robust port and logistics infrastructure. SK Group's strategy involves leveraging its strengths in AI, data centers, and energy solutions to contribute to Vietnam's AI industry development.
Why It's Important?
This development signifies a strategic move by SK Group to position itself as a key player in the global AI market, particularly in Southeast Asia. By establishing a presence in Vietnam, SK Group aims to tap into the region's growing demand for AI technologies and infrastructure. The collaboration with Vietnam's NIC and the local government highlights the importance of international partnerships in fostering technological advancements and economic growth. For Vietnam, this partnership could accelerate the development of its AI industry, potentially leading to increased foreign investment, job creation, and technological innovation. The project aligns with Vietnam's broader economic goals of expanding its high-tech industries and enhancing its global competitiveness.
What's Next?
The next steps involve conducting a feasibility study for the AIDC project, linked to the Quynh Lap LNG Power project, which is set to begin construction in 2027. SK Innovation will explore energy solutions to support the data center, while SK Telecom will focus on developing and operating the AIDC. The local government is expected to facilitate the partnership through permits, administrative support, and incentive programs. Additionally, SK Group's collaboration with the NIC will continue to develop Vietnam's AI ecosystem, with a focus on policy development and institutional support. These efforts are expected to lay the groundwork for further expansion of AI infrastructure and capabilities in Vietnam.
