What's Happening?
The FORGE BuildHER Construction Camp is actively working to increase female representation in the construction industry by targeting girls aged 11-14. The camp, now in its third year, aims to build confidence and provide life skills to young women, encouraging
them to consider careers in construction-related fields. Participants engage in hands-on activities, such as constructing a bathroom, which includes laying concrete, building walls, and installing fixtures. The camp also offers exposure to skilled trade professionals and advice on financial literacy and career development from women leaders in the field. The initiative is part of FORGE's broader mission to promote skilled trades and career readiness across Mississippi.
Why It's Important?
The BuildHER Construction Camp addresses the gender disparity in the construction industry, where women are significantly underrepresented. By providing young girls with practical skills and confidence, the camp helps to break down barriers and stereotypes associated with trades. This initiative not only empowers participants but also contributes to diversifying the workforce in construction, potentially leading to more inclusive industry practices. As these young women gain skills and confidence, they may inspire others to pursue similar paths, gradually shifting the demographic landscape of the trades sector.
What's Next?
The camp will conclude with a skills competition, allowing participants to showcase their projects and newly acquired skills. This event serves as a platform for the girls to demonstrate their capabilities and celebrate their achievements. The camp organizers hope that the experience will leave the participants with increased confidence and a broader understanding of the construction industry. The ongoing success of the camp may lead to expanded programs and increased participation, further promoting gender diversity in trades.
Beyond the Headlines
The BuildHER Construction Camp not only provides technical skills but also fosters a sense of community among participants. By connecting young girls with peers who share similar interests, the camp helps build networks that can support their future endeavors. Additionally, the camp's focus on life skills and confidence-building has broader implications for the participants' personal development, equipping them with tools that are valuable beyond the construction industry.
