What's Happening?
U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has updated its trusted traveler app, advising Global Entry members to ensure they have the current version to avoid login issues upon arrival. An outdated app can prevent members from utilizing the expedited processing
benefits. Additionally, CBP is promoting its free Mobile Passport Control (MPC) app as an alternative for eligible travelers to bypass some customs lines. The MPC app is available to U.S. citizens, lawful permanent residents, Canadian B1/B2 visitors, and returning Visa Waiver travelers with an approved ESTA. Unlike Global Entry, MPC does not require an application fee, background check, interview, or pre-approval. Travelers are encouraged to set up the MPC app at home with their passport ready to ensure a smooth process at the airport. The MPC app is not available at all airports and does not replace the need for a physical passport for U.S. citizens.
Why It's Important?
These updates and promotions by CBP are significant for improving the efficiency of international arrivals in the U.S. For Global Entry members, maintaining an updated app is crucial to continue benefiting from faster processing, which saves time and reduces congestion at customs. The wider adoption of the free Mobile Passport Control app could significantly reduce wait times for a broader range of travelers, including those who do not travel frequently enough to justify the cost of Global Entry. This initiative aims to streamline the entry process, potentially enhancing the travel experience for millions of individuals entering the United States. Reduced wait times can also have a positive economic impact by facilitating business travel and tourism, making U.S. airports more attractive and efficient entry points.
What's Next?
Travelers, particularly Global Entry members, should proactively check and update their CBP trusted traveler apps before their next international flight to ensure functionality. Those eligible for Mobile Passport Control are advised to download and set up the app in advance to maximize its benefits. CBP will likely continue to expand the availability of the MPC app to more airports, further enhancing its utility. The agency's ongoing efforts to integrate technology into border processing suggest a future with increasingly automated and streamlined arrival procedures. Travelers should also remain aware of any further updates or changes to CBP's mobile applications and entry requirements, which are typically communicated through official CBP channels.
Beyond the Headlines
The increasing reliance on mobile applications and digital processes for border control reflects a broader trend towards technological integration in government services. While these advancements offer convenience and efficiency, they also raise questions about digital literacy and access for all travelers, particularly older demographics or those with limited smartphone access. The shift also highlights the importance of data security and privacy, as more personal information is processed digitally. Furthermore, the success of these apps depends on their reliability and user-friendliness, as technical glitches can undermine the intended benefits and cause frustration. This move towards digital-first processing underscores the evolving landscape of international travel, where preparedness extends beyond physical documents to include digital readiness.
