What's Happening?
Idaho ski resorts have seen a significant increase in popularity over the past five years, with more than 2 million skier visits annually since the 2020-21 season. According to a report by RRC, a Colorado-based research firm commissioned by Ski Idaho,
the 2022-23 season set a record with 2.5 million skier visits. Idaho ranks sixth nationally for skier days per capita, with an index of 412, indicating that Idaho residents enjoy 4.12 times more skier days per capita than the average. The report highlights that 57.4% of these visits were from Idaho residents, while 42.6% were from out-of-state visitors. The economic impact of these visits is substantial, with skiers and snowboarders spending $402 million in Idaho during the winter of 2023-24, contributing to a total economic output exceeding $1 billion.
Why It's Important?
The growth in skier visits to Idaho's resorts has significant economic implications for the state. The ski industry directly and indirectly generated $569 million in gross domestic product in Idaho, accounting for 0.5% of the state's 2023 GDP. This growth reflects a 74% increase in total economic output from the 2020-2021 season. The influx of visitors not only supports the ski resorts but also benefits other local businesses, with nearly half of the spending occurring outside the ski areas. This trend underscores the importance of the ski industry to Idaho's travel economy, representing 8% of the sector. The increased popularity of Idaho's slopes could lead to further investments in infrastructure and services, enhancing the state's appeal as a winter sports destination.
What's Next?
As Idaho continues to attract more skiers and snowboarders, the state may see further development in its ski resorts and related infrastructure. This could include expansions of existing facilities, improvements in transportation access, and increased marketing efforts to attract more out-of-state visitors. The economic benefits could also encourage local businesses to cater more to the winter sports market, potentially leading to job creation and increased economic activity in the region. Additionally, the state may explore strategies to sustain and enhance this growth, ensuring that the ski industry remains a vital component of Idaho's economy.
