What's Happening?
The Bowling Green State University (BGSU) Falcon Marching Band (FMB) has received a formal invitation to participate in the 2027 Tournament of Roses Parade. Terry Madigan, President of the Pasadena Tournament of Roses for 2026-2027, personally extended
the invitation during a visit to BGSU. This marks a significant achievement for the FMB, which is expected to be the largest band to march in the parade, with approximately 600 members traveling to Pasadena. The selection process for the parade bands begins two years in advance, with criteria focusing on musicality, technical expertise, and 'esprit de corps' or band culture. Madigan noted that the FMB's culture aligns with the values sought by the Tournament of Roses. FMB Director Jon Waters expressed excitement for the band to represent the university on a national and international stage.
Why It's Important?
The invitation to the Tournament of Roses Parade offers a unique platform for BGSU and its Falcon Marching Band to gain national and international recognition. Performing in front of an estimated 700,000 in-person spectators and 50 million television viewers across 60 countries provides unparalleled exposure for the university's music program and the institution as a whole. This event can significantly enhance BGSU's reputation, potentially attracting more prospective students to its arts programs and other academic fields. For the student musicians, it represents a life-changing experience, fostering a sense of accomplishment and pride. The extensive travel and performance opportunity also contribute to the students' personal and professional development, offering them a chance to engage with a global audience and represent their community on a grand scale. The event also highlights the importance of collegiate marching bands as cultural ambassadors.
What's Next?
The Falcon Marching Band will now prepare for its appearance in the 2027 Tournament of Roses Parade. While BGSU has provided some financial support for the trip, individual band members are responsible for a portion of the costs. The FMB is actively seeking donations to help offset these expenses for its members. Terry Madigan, the Tournament of Roses President, will continue his tour, visiting all 22 selected bands from around the world to extend personal invitations. For those unable to attend the parade in Pasadena, Madigan encourages watching the event from home and showing support for the band. The FMB's journey to the parade will involve extensive practice and fundraising efforts over the coming months to ensure a successful and memorable performance.
