What's Happening?
Frontex and the World Customs Organization (WCO) have collaborated on a pilot operation named Balkans Action Days, targeting the smuggling of undeclared cash and valuables in Southeast Europe. The operation, conducted from July 20 to 24, 2026, involved
countries such as Bulgaria, Greece, North Macedonia, Montenegro, and Serbia. It resulted in the seizure of significant amounts of cash in various currencies and silver jewelry. Frontex officers supported national authorities in detecting and stopping these illegal activities at borders.
Why It's Important?
This operation highlights the ongoing issue of cash smuggling, which remains a preferred method for criminals due to its anonymity and ease of transport. The collaboration between Frontex and the WCO demonstrates a strategic approach to combating cross-border crime, which is essential for maintaining the integrity of financial systems and preventing the funding of illicit activities such as drug trafficking and human smuggling. The success of such operations can lead to more secure borders and a reduction in organized crime.
