What's Happening?
The Karnataka Pradesh Krishik Samaj (KPKS) is advocating for the State government to upgrade the Diploma Agriculture College in Bidar to a degree-level institution. This request was made during the ongoing Winter Session of the Legislature. Siddaramaiah
Swamy, the KPKS Bidar district president, highlighted the district's reliance on agriculture, with farmers cultivating around 52 different crops. Currently, students must travel approximately 250 km to the University of Agricultural Sciences in Raichur for degree courses, posing a challenge for those from rural and economically disadvantaged backgrounds. The district already hosts a Krishi Vigyan Kendra and an Agricultural Research Station, which support local farmers. Swamy emphasized the availability of land and infrastructure for the upgrade, including 125 acres of government land and existing facilities at the Diploma College.
Why It's Important?
Upgrading the college to a degree-level institution could significantly impact the local community by providing easier access to higher education in agriculture. This move could enhance educational opportunities for students from rural and low-income families, reducing the need for long-distance travel. Additionally, it could bolster the local economy by equipping more individuals with advanced agricultural knowledge, potentially leading to improved farming practices and productivity. The upgrade could also attract more students to the area, fostering a more educated workforce that could contribute to the district's agricultural development.
What's Next?
The KPKS has submitted a memorandum to the Minister for Agriculture, urging action during the Winter Session. If the government decides to proceed with the upgrade, it would involve planning and resource allocation to expand the current infrastructure. This decision could prompt further discussions among stakeholders, including educational authorities and local government officials, to ensure the successful implementation of the upgrade. The outcome of these discussions will determine the timeline and specific steps required to transition the college to a degree-granting institution.
