What's Happening?
Survivors of the Palisades and Eaton fires in California can now defer their 2025 property tax payments until June 30, 2030, without incurring interest or penalties. This deferment is part of an initiative by the Every Fire Survivor’s Network, supported
by elected officials and Governor Gavin Newsom's executive order. The program is designed to assist homeowners whose properties were damaged or destroyed by the fires, allowing them to apply for a deferment through the Los Angeles County Assessor’s Office. Eligible properties must be located in specific ZIP codes declared in the governor's executive order, and the damage must exceed $100,000 in current market value.
Why It's Important?
The deferment provides significant financial relief to fire survivors, allowing them to focus on rebuilding their lives without the immediate burden of property taxes. This initiative also underscores the importance of government support in disaster recovery efforts, highlighting the role of state and local authorities in providing necessary aid to affected communities. By extending the deferment period, the program aims to prevent financial strain on homeowners, potentially reducing the risk of foreclosure and enabling a more stable recovery process.
What's Next?
Eligible homeowners are encouraged to apply for the deferment as soon as possible to ensure they meet the requirements and deadlines. The Los Angeles County Treasurer and Tax Collector advises making partial payments when possible to avoid a large payment at the end of the deferment period. The program's success will depend on effective communication and support from local authorities to ensure all eligible homeowners are aware of and can access the available relief.
