What's Happening?
The WNET Group has partnered with Japan International Broadcasting (JIB) to launch the NHK World-Japan channel in the New York Designated Market Area (DMA). This service, which began on April 1, is now available on public media station WLIW’s digital
channel 21.3 and through local cable providers such as Optimum, Spectrum, Comcast, Verizon Fios, and Astound/RCN. NHK World-Japan is the English-language international service of Japan's public broadcaster, NHK. The channel offers diverse content on Japanese society, history, food, and politics, aiming to provide a unique perspective on Japanese culture and international news to English-speaking viewers in Long Island and the tri-state area. Neal Shapiro, President & CEO of The WNET Group, expressed pride in expanding NHK's programming reach, while Hiroshi Maeda, President & CEO of JIB, highlighted the collaboration's potential to enhance cultural understanding.
Why It's Important?
The launch of NHK World-Japan in New York represents a significant expansion of cultural and informational exchange between Japan and the United States. By providing English-language content on Japanese culture and global news, the channel can enhance cultural understanding and appreciation among American audiences. This initiative also reflects the growing interest in diverse international programming, which can enrich the media landscape in the U.S. and offer viewers alternative perspectives on global issues. For The WNET Group, this partnership strengthens its programming portfolio and aligns with its mission to deliver high-quality, educational content to its audience.
What's Next?
Viewers using digital antennas will need to rescan their tuners to receive the updated channel lineup, including NHK World-Japan on WLIW 21.3. The World Channel will also move to 13.3 (THIRTEEN WORLD) on April 1. As the channel becomes more established, it may attract a broader audience interested in Japanese culture and international news, potentially leading to further collaborations and content offerings. The success of this launch could encourage other media partnerships and expansions, fostering greater cultural exchange and understanding.
