What's Happening?
Amazon has launched a new telehealth service aimed at children aged two to eleven through its Amazon One Medical brand. This service allows parents and guardians to book pay-per-visit telehealth appointments with certified family care providers for various
children's health needs, such as pink eye, lice, skin-related issues, and renewals of EpiPen and asthma medications. The service offers $29 message-based visits and $49 video consultations, which include treatment plans and prescriptions when necessary. This initiative is linked to Amazon's pharmacy division to facilitate prescription fulfillment for users of the service.
Why It's Important?
The introduction of this telehealth service by Amazon is significant as it addresses the ongoing challenges in accessing healthcare in the U.S., particularly for children. With hospital closures, layoffs, and staffing shortages, many families face difficulties in obtaining timely medical care. By providing a convenient and cost-effective option for non-emergency medical issues, Amazon aims to fill a gap in the healthcare system. This move also represents Amazon's continued expansion into the healthcare sector, following its acquisition of One Medical and the launch of Amazon Pharmacy. The service is designed to complement existing pediatric care, offering a solution for urgent, non-critical health concerns.
What's Next?
Amazon plans to integrate its pharmacy services further by introducing Amazon Pharmacy vending machines in Amazon One Medical locations, starting in Los Angeles in December. This expansion could enhance the accessibility and convenience of obtaining medications prescribed during telehealth consultations. As Amazon continues to grow its healthcare offerings, it may face reactions from traditional healthcare providers and pharmacy chains, potentially leading to increased competition and innovation in the sector.
