What's Happening?
A new initiative aimed at improving hair and makeup standards for textured hair and dark skin tones in the UK film and TV industry has received backing from major networks. The 'Textured Hair & Make-up for Deep Skin-Tones Accelerator' is a masterclass-focused
training program designed to provide practical solutions for equitable styling. Supported by networks such as BBC, Sky, and ITV, the initiative builds on the 2025 Hair & Make-Up Equity Guidelines. It addresses the ongoing issue of inadequate hair and makeup services for actors from Black, Asian, and minority ethnic backgrounds, which has been a significant concern in the industry.
Why It's Important?
This initiative is a critical step towards addressing long-standing disparities in the film and TV industry regarding hair and makeup services for diverse actors. By providing targeted training and resources, the program aims to ensure that all actors receive appropriate styling that respects their cultural and ethnic backgrounds. This move not only enhances the authenticity and quality of productions but also promotes inclusivity and representation within the industry. The backing from major networks signifies a commitment to fostering a more equitable and diverse creative environment.
What's Next?
The initiative will roll out masterclasses in partnership with the Kevin Fortune Hair Styling Academy, with programs scheduled for both the north and south of the UK. As the initiative progresses, it may inspire similar efforts in other regions and industries, further promoting diversity and inclusion. The success of this program could lead to the development of additional training modules and resources, expanding its impact and reach.
