Chronic absenteeism, defined as students missing 10% or more of the school year, remains a significant issue in American schools following the COVID-19 pandemic. Before the pandemic, approximately 15%
of students were chronically absent. This figure surged to over 28% between 2022 and 2023 and currently stands at around 23% nationally, meaning nearly one in four students are missing enough school to jeopardize their learning. While factors like poverty, unreliable transportation, and housing instability contribute to absenteeism, research indicates that school climate plays a crucial role. Studies in Georgia, New York City, and Chicago have found that students who feel safe, connected, and supported at school are significantly less likely to be chronically absent. Conversely, a decline in perceived school welcoming and support can lead to dramatic spikes in absences, particularly among Black and Latino students.
