Senator John Hoeven (R-N.D.) has urged the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to implement additional water conservation measures for the Missouri River, particularly during the fall and winter seasons. This call comes after the Corps set the winter release
rate for the main dam system in the upper Missouri River Basin at 12,000 cubic feet per second, which is the minimum allowable level. Despite previous efforts by the Corps to reduce flows and shorten the navigation support season, Lake Sakakawea's water levels are projected to drop by approximately 5 feet by the end of February 2027. As of September 9, Lake Sakakawea's elevation at Garrison Dam was 1,824.97 feet, about 12.5 feet below its normal conservation pool. Senator Hoeven's office has been actively tracking water levels and pressing the agency to reserve water in anticipation of continued drought conditions into 2027.
