NASA is investigating the possibility of establishing human habitats in the atmosphere of Venus, approximately 50 kilometers above its surface, where conditions are more Earth-like. This concept, explored by NASA engineer Geoffrey Landis, suggests that
aerostat settlements could float at this altitude, using the dense carbon dioxide atmosphere for buoyancy. The High Altitude Venus Operational Concept (HAVOC) study by NASA examined the feasibility of a 30-day crewed mission using a lighter-than-air vehicle. However, significant challenges remain, including the need for protection against sulfuric acid clouds and the development of closed-loop life support systems.
