What's Happening?
The International Trade Centre (ITC) is recruiting an Administrative Assistant (LICA 5) in Abuja, Nigeria, for its Africa Trade Competitiveness and Market Access Programme (ATCMA). This four-year umbrella program, funded by the European Union and jointly
implemented by the ITC and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), aims to significantly boost intra-African trade and trade between Africa and the EU. The program focuses on improving market access for specific value chains and enhancing the export competitiveness of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) within these sectors. Key objectives include reducing trade barriers, strengthening compliance with quality standards, and promoting value addition and export diversification. A particular emphasis is placed on supporting women- and youth-led businesses to foster economic inclusion and sustainable business practices. The Administrative Assistant will provide crucial support in coordinating administrative processes for the ATCMA ECOWAS sub-regional component.
Why It's Important?
This administrative role is vital for the effective execution of the ATCMA program, which holds significant importance for economic development across Africa. By enhancing the competitiveness of SMEs and improving market access, the program directly contributes to job creation, poverty reduction, and economic diversification in the region. The focus on women- and youth-led businesses is particularly impactful, as these groups often face greater barriers to market entry and growth. Empowering them can lead to more inclusive economic development and stronger, more resilient communities. The program's efforts to reduce trade barriers and improve quality standards are essential for integrating African economies more deeply into regional and global value chains, fostering sustainable trade relationships and long-term economic stability.
What's Next?
The application deadline for the Administrative Assistant position is October 23, 2026. Once the position is filled, the selected candidate will play a key role in supporting the ATCMA ECOWAS program's administrative functions, ensuring smooth operations for its various components. The program will continue its work on identifying and reducing market access barriers, strengthening quality compliance, facilitating value-chain revision mechanisms, enhancing value addition and diversification, and building the capacities of SMEs for business and export. The ITC, in collaboration with UNIDO and the EU, will monitor the program's progress and impact, aiming to achieve its overarching goals of increasing trade and fostering sustainable economic growth across Africa, with a particular focus on the ECOWAS region.
Beyond the Headlines
The ATCMA program, supported by roles like the Administrative Assistant, represents a broader commitment to fostering regional economic integration and sustainable development in Africa. By addressing systemic issues such as trade barriers and lack of market access, the program aims to create a more equitable and dynamic trading environment. The emphasis on women and youth in business is not just an economic strategy but also a social one, promoting gender equality and empowering future generations. This initiative contributes to the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals by promoting decent work and economic growth, reducing inequalities, and building strong partnerships for development. The long-term success of such programs can lead to increased self-reliance for African nations and a stronger position in the global economy.
