What's Happening?
The 15th Iowa Youth Institute, hosted by the World Food Prize Foundation at Iowa State University, welcomed over 365 students to explore global challenges related to hunger, agriculture, and food security. Participants prepared Global Challenge Research
Papers on food security issues in various countries and presented solutions in discussions with scientists, industry professionals, and academic leaders. The event featured remarks from notable figures such as Tom Vilsack, CEO of the World Food Prize Foundation, and Mashal Husain, its President. The institute aims to connect students with leaders in science, agriculture, and global development through presentations, roundtable discussions, and interactive campus experiences. The program, established 15 years ago with support from former Iowa Governor Terry Branstad, has become a leading pipeline for developing future agricultural and food security leaders.
Why It's Important?
The Iowa Youth Institute plays a crucial role in preparing the next generation to tackle global food security challenges. By engaging students in research and discussions with experts, the program fosters innovation and leadership in agriculture and STEM fields. The initiative reflects a commitment to investing in young leaders who can contribute to building a more food-secure world. Scholarships offered through the program, including the newly announced World Food Prize Foundation Ambassador Terry Branstad Scholars in STEM Award, provide financial support to students pursuing STEM pathways. This investment in education and leadership development is vital for addressing pressing global issues such as hunger and sustainable agriculture.
What's Next?
The Iowa Youth Institute will continue to offer scholarships and opportunities for students to engage in global food security efforts. The World Food Prize Foundation plans to award the Ambassador Terry Branstad Scholars in STEM Award at the Iowa Hunger Summit in July 2026. Students participating in the institute can receive scholarships to Iowa State University, with additional opportunities for those attending the Global Youth Institute in Des Moines or participating in the Borlaug-Ruan International Internship. These initiatives aim to expand the reach and impact of the program, encouraging more young people to pursue careers in agriculture and food security.
