What's Happening?
The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) is implementing a new siren system known as the Rumbler, designed to improve emergency response by making sirens more noticeable to drivers. The Rumbler, which has been used by the New York Police Department since
2009, emits low-frequency sound waves that can penetrate solid materials, allowing both drivers and pedestrians to feel the sound waves. This system is being installed in 20 LAPD vehicles initially, with plans for broader deployment. The Rumbler is intended to address the issue of drivers not yielding to emergency vehicles due to modern cars' soundproofing capabilities. While some view the Rumbler as a necessary tool for public safety, others, like Richard Tur of NoiseOff, express concerns about its potential to cause noise pollution and discomfort to bystanders.
