What's Happening?
TotalEnergies has entered into agreements with NextDecade to acquire a 10% direct stake in the joint venture developing Train 4 of the Rio Grande LNG project in South Texas. This liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant project is set to enhance TotalEnergies' LNG export capacity from the United States. In addition to the direct stake, TotalEnergies will hold an indirect stake of nearly 7% through its 17.1% shareholding in NextDecade. The Final Investment Decision (FID) for Train 4 has been made by TotalEnergies, NextDecade, and partners including Global Infrastructure Partners, GIC, and Mubadala. Train 4 will have a capacity of approximately 6 million tons per annum, increasing the plant's total capacity to 24 million tons per annum by 2030. The project will be financed with 40% equity and 60% debt.
Why It's Important?
The acquisition of a stake in Train 4 by TotalEnergies is significant as it strengthens the company's LNG export capacity from the United States, contributing to its global market share of 10%. This expansion is crucial for TotalEnergies as it provides access to competitive LNG due to low production costs. The increased capacity will enable TotalEnergies to export over 16 million tons per annum by 2030, enhancing its ability to supply gas globally. The project also supports the U.S. LNG industry by boosting export capabilities and providing affordable, reliable energy to international markets.
What's Next?
With the Final Investment Decision made, the development of Train 4 is set to proceed, with operations expected to commence by 2030. TotalEnergies will continue to offtake 1.5 million tons per annum of LNG from Train 4 for 20 years, as per the Sales and Purchase Agreement with NextDecade. The completion of Train 4 will further solidify TotalEnergies' position in the U.S. LNG market and contribute to global energy supply.
