What's Happening?
LISTERINE® has launched a multiyear education and advocacy initiative called 'Oral Care Counts' on World Smile Day. This campaign aims to highlight the essential role of oral health in overall well-being and promote practical daily habits, including a three-step
routine of brushing, flossing, and rinsing. The initiative comes as global research indicates a significant increase in oral disease cases, with nearly half of the world's population affected. A systematic analysis published in The Lancet Public Health found that cases of major oral conditions, such as untreated tooth decay, severe periodontitis, and total tooth loss, rose by 3.07% over four years. This trend suggests that progress is too slow to meet the World Health Organization's (WHO) 2030 target for reducing oral diseases. LISTERINE® plans to engage healthcare professionals, advocates, policymakers, community organizations, and consumers to support evidence-based education and improve access to oral health information and preventive care.
Why It's Important?
The 'Oral Care Counts' initiative is important because it addresses a growing public health concern: the rising prevalence of oral diseases globally, which also impacts the U.S. population. Oral health is often overlooked but is intrinsically linked to overall health and well-being. Poor oral health can lead to various systemic issues and significantly impact an individual's quality of life, comfort, and confidence. By emphasizing practical, achievable daily habits, LISTERINE® aims to empower individuals to take better control of their oral health, potentially reducing the burden on healthcare systems. The campaign's focus on education and advocacy, involving diverse stakeholders from healthcare professionals to policymakers, could lead to improved public understanding, better self-care practices, and enhanced access to preventive oral care, particularly in underserved communities. This could translate into healthier outcomes for many Americans and a potential decrease in related healthcare costs.
What's Next?
The 'Oral Care Counts' initiative is a multiyear campaign, suggesting a sustained effort to raise awareness and promote oral health practices. Future steps will likely involve continued collaboration with organizations such as the American Dental Hygienists Association, the National Rural Health Association, and Young Minds Inspired to deliver educational content, training sessions, and resources. LISTERINE® also plans to support healthcare professionals, including pharmacists, with evidence-based education through partnerships like the pharmacy upskilling program with Meijer and the National Community Pharmacists Association. These efforts aim to reach more patients and consumers, especially in rural communities, and educate them on the importance of preventive oral care. The campaign will also focus on affordability and access to oral health information and care, with activations planned in the United States and other key global markets.
Beyond the Headlines
Beyond the immediate goal of improving oral hygiene, this initiative touches upon broader implications for public health policy and consumer behavior. The rising global oral disease rates underscore a systemic challenge that extends beyond individual habits, pointing to issues like inadequate fluoride exposure, high-sugar diets, and limited access to professional dental services. The campaign's emphasis on the link between oral health and overall well-being could encourage a more holistic approach to healthcare, potentially influencing how health insurance policies cover preventive dental care. Furthermore, by engaging policymakers and community organizations, 'Oral Care Counts' could contribute to long-term shifts in public health strategies, advocating for greater integration of oral health into primary care and broader public health initiatives. This could lead to a re-evaluation of how preventive health is funded and promoted, fostering a culture where oral health is recognized as a fundamental component of a healthy life.
