What's Happening?
Vantor, previously known as Maxar Intelligence, has been awarded a new contract by the U.S. Space Force to provide in-space observations and analysis. This contract is part of the Space Force's Joint Commercial
Operations program, which aims to enhance the monitoring of high-interest objects in space, particularly those in blind spots not visible to ground-based sensors. Vantor will utilize its existing satellites, which are capable of non-Earth imaging, to track the location, velocity, attitude, and maneuvers of these objects. The company plans to collect up to 1,000 non-Earth imaging (NEI) images daily by 2026, using satellites that can shift focus without burning fuel, thanks to their inertial systems.
Why It's Important?
This contract signifies a strategic enhancement in the U.S. Department of Defense's (DoD) space monitoring capabilities. By leveraging Vantor's advanced satellite technology, the Space Force can improve its ability to track and analyze space objects, which is crucial for national security and space traffic management. The contract also highlights the growing importance of in-space monitoring as part of the DoD's strategy, with Vantor's business expected to become a multi-million dollar line item. This development could lead to increased investment in space technology and further collaboration between the government and private sector in space operations.
What's Next?
Vantor is expected to continue expanding its in-space monitoring capabilities, potentially securing additional contracts as the demand for space situational awareness grows. The company is already involved in other initiatives, such as the Commercial Collision Avoidance Gap Pathfinder program and the Space Development Agency's Tools, Applications, & Processing Lab. These efforts will likely contribute to the company's growth and the broader development of space monitoring technologies, influencing future defense and commercial space strategies.
