What's Happening?
The government of President Nayib Bukele recently celebrated the Art & Design Festival at Cerro Verde Natural Park, showcasing Salvadoran creativity and the country's expanding cultural and tourism industries. The event featured products developed through
SMODA, a platform supported by the National Commission for Micro and Small Enterprises (CONAMYPE), which promotes Salvadoran design and craftsmanship. According to CONAMYPE President Paul Steiner, the SMODA cluster was launched in 2019 to help artisans adapt traditional techniques into contemporary products for national and international markets. The festival reflects El Salvador's strategy to strengthen its creative economy and position Salvadoran design as competitive cultural exports.
Why It's Important?
This festival is significant as it highlights El Salvador's efforts to boost its creative economy and cultural exports. By promoting local artisans and designers, the government aims to enhance the country's international cultural presence and tourism appeal. The initiative supports small businesses and entrepreneurs, potentially leading to increased economic opportunities and job creation. The focus on cultural exports aligns with broader economic strategies to diversify the economy and reduce reliance on traditional sectors.
