What's Happening?
Leonardo, an Italian aerospace and defense company, has announced plans to test its Michelangelo Dome missile-defense system in Ukraine by the end of the year. This initiative is part of Leonardo's broader strategy to establish itself as a global security
leader by 2030. The Michelangelo Dome is designed to create a 'dead zone' capable of detecting and neutralizing various threats, including drone swarms and ballistic missiles. The system will undergo further trials with NATO in 2027, and Leonardo is in discussions with approximately 20 countries interested in adopting the technology. The company anticipates significant revenue growth from these ventures, projecting €30 billion in annual revenue by 2030.
Why It's Important?
The deployment of Leonardo's missile-defense system in Ukraine is significant as it could set a precedent for other nations seeking advanced defense capabilities. With global defense spending expected to exceed $1 trillion by 2030, Leonardo's initiative positions the company to capture a substantial share of this market. The system's ability to integrate with existing national and European defense infrastructures enhances its appeal to potential international clients. Successful trials could lead to widespread adoption, bolstering Leonardo's revenue and influence in the defense sector. This development also underscores the increasing importance of space-enabled defense technologies in modern warfare.
What's Next?
Following the initial trials in Ukraine, Leonardo plans to conduct NATO trials in 2027, focusing on the system's effectiveness against ballistic missiles. The company is also working on launching its Space Guardian satellite constellation to support the Michelangelo Dome's operations. These satellites will provide high-resolution imaging and communication capabilities, enhancing the system's threat detection and response capabilities. As Leonardo continues to engage with interested countries, the company aims to secure contracts that could generate €21 billion in new business opportunities over the next decade.
