The Committee on Space Research (COSPAR) has developed a Sample Safety Assessment Framework (SSAF) to evaluate the potential risks associated with samples returned from Mars. This framework was created
by a COSPAR-appointed Working Group to determine whether these samples could pose a threat to Earth's systems, including the environment, biosphere, and geochemical cycles. The SSAF aims to assess the possibility of Martian life in the samples, starting from a hypothesis that such life exists. The framework includes elements like Bayesian statistics, subsampling strategies, and test sequences to evaluate self-replicating and non-self-replicating biology.
