What's Happening?
Salt Lake City has appointed Zach Posner as its new Chief Information Officer (CIO) following the departure of Aaron Bentley, who left to join the state of Utah as deputy director of agency services. Bentley, who had been with Salt Lake City since 2001,
officially began his new role on January 5, 2026. Posner, the former CIO for Salt Lake County, was appointed by the City Council during a meeting where his appointment was unanimously approved. Posner brings extensive experience from both public and private sectors, having served as CIO for Salt Lake County since July 2017, where he managed IT strategy and operations for over 1.3 million residents. His previous roles include senior positions at Black Diamond Equipment and NPR.
Why It's Important?
The appointment of Zach Posner as Salt Lake City's CIO is significant as it ensures continuity in leadership within the city's technology department, which is crucial for maintaining and advancing IT infrastructure and services. Posner's experience in both public and private sectors is expected to bring a balanced perspective to the role, potentially enhancing the city's IT strategy and operations. This leadership change is also important for the state of Utah, as it strengthens the collaboration between city and state IT departments, potentially leading to more integrated and efficient public services.
What's Next?
With Posner's appointment, Salt Lake City is likely to continue its focus on improving IT services and infrastructure. The city may also explore new initiatives under Posner's leadership, leveraging his experience in cybersecurity, software development, and enterprise resource planning. The transition at Salt Lake County, where Posner previously served, will also be closely watched as the county seeks his successor. This change could lead to shifts in IT priorities and strategies at both the city and county levels.
