What's Happening?
Idaho Falls Power has inaugurated a new natural gas-fired peaking generation plant, marking a significant milestone in its 125-year history. The 17.5-MW facility, which represents a $36 million investment, was approved by the Idaho Falls City Council
in early 2024. The plant is designed to provide electricity during peak demand periods, such as the hottest summer days and coldest winter nights, thereby reducing the utility's reliance on external market purchases. The project was executed with the support of ESI, a construction company based in Meridian, Idaho. The new plant also features seven Caterpillar generators capable of running on hydrogen fuel in the future, aligning with environmental guidelines set by the Idaho Department of Environmental Quality.
