A new rental building in Chelsea, New York, has opened a lottery for 28 mixed-income apartments. The Andrea, a 12-story building located at the corner of 24th Street and 8th Avenue, offers units priced
from $978/month for studios to $4,376/month for two-bedroom apartments. Developed by the Red Apple Group and designed by SLCE Architects, the building features 104 residences. Amenities include a residents’ lounge, co-working space, landscaped rooftop, concierge service, fitness center, private storage, and bike storage lockers. The building is pet-friendly, allowing one pet per unit without a deposit. The apartments come equipped with high-end kitchen appliances, air conditioning, dishwashers, and in-unit washers and dryers. Applications for the lottery are open to New Yorkers earning 40, 60, and 130 percent of the area median income until January 13, 2026.
Why It's Important?
The opening of affordable housing options in Chelsea addresses the ongoing demand for accessible living spaces in New York City, particularly for seniors and low-to-moderate income residents. This initiative is part of a broader effort to provide diverse housing solutions in urban areas, potentially easing the housing crisis. The inclusion of amenities such as co-working spaces and fitness centers reflects a trend towards integrating lifestyle features in residential developments, enhancing the quality of life for tenants. The pet-friendly policy also caters to the growing number of pet owners seeking accommodation in the city. This development could serve as a model for future projects aiming to balance affordability with modern living standards.
What's Next?
Interested applicants can apply for the lottery through NYC’s Housing Connect department. The deadline for applications is January 13, 2026. As the lottery progresses, successful applicants will be notified, and the building will begin to fill its units. The development may influence other real estate projects in the area to consider similar mixed-income models, potentially leading to more affordable housing options in Chelsea and surrounding neighborhoods.
