The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has confirmed the largest outbreak of epizootic hemorrhagic disease (EHD) in the state's deer population, with at least 1,200 deer deaths reported, including over 900 in Washington County. EHD is a viral
disease spread by a species of midge, which thrives in hot, humid climates. The first positive cases were identified near Richfield and West Bend, close to bodies of water, as infected deer often seek water to cool their high fevers before succumbing to internal bleeding. While EHD has appeared sporadically in Wisconsin since 2002, this current outbreak significantly surpasses previous incidents. The disease does not spread directly between deer and poses no risk to humans, with venison from infected deer remaining safe for consumption. The outbreak coincides with the opening of Wisconsin's archery and crossbow deer hunting seasons.
