What's Happening?
Former members and staff of the Massey Commission have announced the formation of the Massey Community Action Network (MCAN) on the anniversary of Sonya Massey's death. The organization aims to implement the commission's recommendations through education,
advocacy, and collaboration. The commission was established following the 2024 shooting of Sonya Massey, an unarmed Black woman, by a former Sangamon County Sheriff's Deputy. MCAN seeks to eliminate silos in addressing systemic racism and will focus on securing funding and implementing priority actions. Initial efforts include community education, policy reform, and establishing accountability systems.
Why It's Important?
The establishment of MCAN is a significant step towards addressing systemic racism and ensuring that the recommendations of the Massey Commission lead to tangible change. By focusing on education, policy reform, and collaboration, MCAN aims to create a more equitable society and prevent incidents like the one that led to Sonya Massey's death. The initiative highlights the importance of sustained civic engagement and accountability in driving systemic change. It also underscores the need for community involvement and partnership in addressing complex social issues.
What's Next?
MCAN will work on securing sustainable funding and begin implementing key recommendations from the Massey Commission. The organization plans to focus on creating a 24/7 mobile crisis response system, a co-responder program, and public accountability dashboards. These initiatives aim to improve community safety and trust in law enforcement. MCAN's efforts will likely involve collaboration with public agencies, nonprofits, and community partners to ensure comprehensive and effective implementation of the commission's recommendations.
