New research suggests that the risk of childhood obesity may begin before birth, influenced by the prenatal environment and epigenetic changes. A study by researchers from the Cancer Epigenetics and Nanomedicine Laboratory and the INCLIVA Health Research
Institute in Spain identified persistent molecular changes in newborns of mothers with obesity and gestational diabetes. These changes, known as epigenetic marks, do not alter DNA sequences but instead modify how genes are activated or silenced in response to environmental conditions. The study indicates that the intrauterine environment can leave lasting epigenetic marks that may alter the regulation of genes involved in energy metabolism and mitochondrial bioenergetics, thereby programming metabolic risk early in life.
