The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has announced a significant transition of its Weather and Climate Operational Supercomputing System (WCOSS) to a commercial cloud infrastructure. This move aims to enhance NOAA's suite of weather
forecast models, making them more flexible and easier to update. The transition is expected to improve the accuracy and timeliness of weather forecasts and warnings, particularly for extreme weather events. NOAA Administrator Neil Jacobs highlighted that cloud-based high-performance computing will eliminate traditional bottlenecks and provide access to the latest technology, facilitating rapid updates and adaptations. The transition to the cloud is scheduled to be completed by December 2027, with Google Cloud serving as the primary provider of high-performance computing infrastructure.
