What's Happening?
New research indicates that Uganda could significantly decrease methane emissions by transforming its organic waste into valuable resources such as food, fertilizer, and energy. The study, which combined national waste modeling with input from communities,
government, and industry, highlights practical strategies including composting, biogas production, and Black Soldier Fly treatment. These methods aim to curb emissions while simultaneously supporting agriculture, energy access, and climate resilience. Organic waste constitutes the largest portion of municipal solid waste in Uganda and is a major contributor to methane when it decomposes without oxygen. The research addresses the growing pressure on Uganda's waste management system due to increasing population and urbanization, which has led to limited collection services and uncontrolled burning of uncollected waste. The study emphasizes that approaches developed for high-income countries are often unsuitable for Uganda due to differing waste streams, infrastructure, funding levels, and local needs, necessitating a tailored approach involving various local stakeholders.

The 'additional-measures scenario' outlined in the research projects a potential reduction of methane emissions by 30% in 2035 and 52% in 2050, avoiding millions of tonnes of CO2-equivalent methane emissions annually. Implementing these measures will require greater investment in treatment facilities, enhanced waste separation at the source, and improved institutional coordination among government agencies and other stakeholders. Future steps will likely involve detailed cost-benefit assessments of different treatment options and efforts to address data limitations in some regions to accurately estimate local waste flows.
