What's Happening?
Stakeholders in the media industry are calling for the establishment of a structured, industry-led self-regulation framework to protect press freedom and enhance accountability. During consultations organized
by the Media Resources Development Initiative, participants highlighted challenges such as biased reporting, ownership concentration, and inadequate protections for journalists. They emphasized the need for a credible self-regulation system to address these issues and restore public trust. Key recommendations include the establishment of an independent ombudsperson within news outlets to uphold standards and address audience grievances.
Why It's Important?
The call for self-regulation in the media industry is crucial in the context of increasing misinformation and disinformation. A robust framework could protect journalists from undue influence and ensure greater accountability to the public. This initiative aims to strengthen professional oversight and address grievances, which are essential for maintaining the integrity of journalism. The proposed self-regulation framework could serve as a safeguard against political and corporate pressures, ultimately supporting the survival and credibility of the news media industry.
What's Next?
The Media Resources Development Initiative plans to compile actionable suggestions from the consultations into a policy brief to support the development of a practical self-regulation model. This brief will be handed over to editorial bodies and owners' associations, with the aim of fostering collaboration among stakeholders. The initiative is part of a strategic action plan on advocacy for media reform in Bangladesh, supported by The Asia Foundation and the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office.
