The City of Fort Wayne has been recognized by a nationwide association of mayors for its proactive climate protection efforts. Under the leadership of Mayor Sharon Tucker, the city implemented a heatmapping program in 2024, which involved collaboration
with federal agencies and local volunteers. This initiative aimed to identify the warmest areas in the city, particularly focusing on neighborhoods like East Central, which experience higher temperatures, poverty, and poor air quality. The data collected was used to develop community-supported actions, such as increasing shaded bus stops, to mitigate the effects of extreme heat.
