Tennessee Governor Bill Lee, alongside the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC), announced the issuance of the state’s first fusion-specific byproduct material license to Type One Energy. This license is a preparatory step for a new
commercial fusion project and positions Tennessee as the first state in the nation to issue such a license under a new regulatory framework for nuclear fusion machines. The announcement was made at the annual meeting of the Organization of Agreement States (OAS) in Nashville. Type One Energy, a Knoxville-based company, plans to break ground on the first phase of Project Infinity at TVA’s Bull Run Energy Complex in Clinton, Tennessee, this year, with full startup anticipated by 2034. The project aims to develop a 400 MWe fusion power plant using stellarator technology. TDEC’s Division of Radiological Health developed this first-of-its-kind licensing program after the Nuclear Regulatory Commission delegated the regulation of fusion energy production to the states.
