Residents of Incline Village, Nevada, a wealthy enclave in Lake Tahoe, have collectively offered a $147,000 reward for information leading to the successful prosecution of individuals responsible for poisoning numerous trees. Since 2022, 28 trees have been
poisoned, with at least 10 dying, some over a century old. The attacks escalated this summer, with 16 trees—13 Jeffrey pines and three white firs—poisoned between May and early August. The Incline Village General Improvement District, which manages the affected Burnt Cedar Beach, contributed $25,000 to the reward and installed additional cameras. The Friends of Burnt Cedar Beach, a group of private donors, raised the remaining $122,000. Investigators believe the perpetrator drilled holes near the roots of conifers and poured chemicals inside. Past incidents involved diesel fuel, and more recently, blue granules and a strong-smelling liquid were observed. Soil samples have been sent to the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office for analysis. The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency is also investigating the incidents.
