What's Happening?
The Vermont Agency of Agriculture, Food and Markets has announced the distribution of $8 million in grants aimed at improving water quality across the state. This initiative is part of the Agricultural Clean Water Initiative Program, which seeks to reduce
nutrient runoff on Vermont farms. The grants will fund local and regional partners who collaborate with farmers to implement conservation practices. Since the program's inception in 2017, it has supported over 30 partners in expanding education, outreach, and technical assistance services to the agricultural community. Notably, more than 80% of on-site assistance since 2020 has been directed to small farm operations. The program is funded by the Clean Water Fund, established under Vermont’s Clean Water Act in 2015.

What's Next?
Eligible applicants, including individuals, businesses, and organizations working with Vermont farmers, can submit proposals for the grants in early November. A public hearing on the draft fiscal year 2027 clean water budget is scheduled for November 7, offering an opportunity for public feedback. The hearing will be held at National Life in Montpelier, with an option to attend online. The Vermont Agency of Agriculture is also celebrating the 10-year anniversary of the Clean Water Act with a story map developed in collaboration with the University of Vermont Rubenstein School for the Environment, outlining key achievements in agricultural water quality.
