What's Happening?
Washington State Ferries (WSF) is advancing its ferry electrification program with the awarding of contracts to Eastern Shipbuilding Group for the construction of three new hybrid-electric vessels. The
$714.5 million bid was selected by Washington Governor Bob Ferguson earlier this year. These vessels, designed to transport 160 standard-sized passenger vehicles and 1,500 passengers, will feature a length of 409 feet and a beam of 83 feet. ABB has been contracted to supply and integrate hybrid-electric propulsion systems for the first two vessels, which are scheduled for delivery in 2030 and 2031. The ferries will include the largest ship batteries ever installed in the United States. Additionally, a vessel charging system contract with Wabtec was signed on November 21. WSF plans to build up to 16 ships by 2040 as part of its initiative to reduce emissions.
Why It's Important?
The advancement of WSF's ferry electrification program is a significant step towards reducing emissions in the maritime sector. By integrating hybrid-electric propulsion systems, these new vessels will contribute to Washington State's environmental goals and set a precedent for sustainable maritime transportation in the U.S. The project not only supports the state's commitment to reducing carbon emissions but also stimulates economic activity by involving major industry players like Eastern Shipbuilding Group and ABB. The initiative reflects a growing trend in the transportation industry towards electrification and sustainability, potentially influencing similar projects across the country.
What's Next?
As the project progresses, stakeholders will be closely monitoring the construction and integration phases to ensure timely delivery and operational efficiency. The successful implementation of these hybrid-electric ferries could lead to further investments in green technology within the maritime industry. Additionally, the project may prompt other states to consider similar electrification initiatives, potentially leading to broader regulatory changes and increased funding for sustainable transportation solutions.
