A family farm in the Sarah Baartman District of South Africa has transformed into a successful agricultural enterprise with the help of a R385,000 government grant. The Ukuvuka Ekuseni Agricultural Primary Cooperative, led by Tommy Thys, has grown from
a modest vegetable farming venture into a cooperative producing tens of thousands of vegetables each harvest cycle. The farm, which operates on 10.72 hectares, produces a variety of vegetables including cabbages, cauliflowers, and broccoli. The Eastern Cape Development Corporation provided the funding through its Imvaba Co-operative Fund, allowing the cooperative to purchase equipment and upgrade irrigation systems, significantly reducing operational costs.
