Erythrulose, a four-carbon ketomonosaccharide, is not essential for life but can be converted into building blocks that might be. This finding adds to the understanding of how prebiotic chemistry might occur in space, suggesting that some of the chemical building blocks for life could have originated in space and been delivered to Earth via meteorites.
