What's Happening?
A research team led by Xiaoxiang Zhu at the Technical University of Munich has developed the Global Building Atlas, a high-resolution 3D map that includes nearly every building on Earth. This dataset, which maps 2.75 billion structures across six continents,
was created using satellite imagery collected since 2019. The atlas offers a spatial resolution of 3 meters by 3 meters, making it significantly more precise than previous global mapping projects. The dataset provides detailed metrics for each structure, including footprint area, structural geometry, and vertical height. This open-access dataset, funded by a European Research Council grant, is intended to serve as a standardized global foundation for built-up volume per capita.
